"narrative": "When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.\n\nNow there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Amazed, they asked, 'Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans? How is it that each of us hears them in our native language?'\n\nSome, however, made fun of them and said, 'They have had too much wine.'\n\nThen Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: 'Fellow Jews, these people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: \"In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.\"'\n\nPeter proclaimed Jesus—His miracles, His death on the cross, His resurrection. 'God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.'\n\nWhen the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said, 'Brothers, what shall we do?'\n\nPeter replied, 'Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'\n\nThose who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.",

"kids_narrative": "Before Jesus went back to heaven, He told His friends, 'Wait in Jerusalem. I'm going to send you a special gift—the Holy Spirit!'\n\nSo the disciples waited. They prayed together in a room. About 120 of Jesus' followers were there.\n\nThen one morning—WHOOOOSH! A sound like a HUGE wind filled the house! But this wasn't regular wind. It was from heaven!\n\nThen they saw something amazing. Little flames of fire appeared and landed on each person's head! But the fire didn't burn them.\n\nThe Holy Spirit filled everyone! Suddenly they could speak in languages they had never learned!\n\nJerusalem was crowded with visitors from many countries. They heard the noise and came running. They were SO confused!\n\n'Wait—those are simple people from Galilee! How can they speak MY language?!'\n\nPeople from everywhere could understand! It was a miracle!\n\nSome people laughed. 'They're just drunk!'\n\nPeter stood up bravely. 'We're not drunk! It's only 9 in the morning! This is what God promised long ago! He said He would pour out His Spirit on everyone!'\n\nThen Peter told them all about Jesus—how He died on the cross and rose again.\n\nThe people felt sorry for their sins. 'What should we do?'\n\n'Believe in Jesus and be baptized!' Peter said.\n\nThat day, THREE THOUSAND people believed! The Church was born!\n\nThe same Holy Spirit lives in everyone who believes in Jesus today!"

Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts.\n\nWhen he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money.\n\nPeter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, 'Look at us!' So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.\n\nThen Peter said, 'Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.'\n\nTaking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.\n\nWhen all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.\n\nPeter used this miracle as an opportunity to preach about Jesus—the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead.",

'Can you spare some money?'\n\nPeter stopped and looked right at him. 'Look at us!'\n\nThe man looked up, hoping they'd give him some coins.\n\nBut Peter said something surprising: 'I don't have any money. But I'll give you what I DO have. In the name of JESUS CHRIST—get up and WALK!'\n\nPeter grabbed the man's hand and pulled him up.\n\nSuddenly—the man felt his feet and ankles get STRONG! For the first time EVER, he could stand!\n\nHe didn't just stand. He JUMPED! He WALKED! He LEAPED!\n\n'PRAISE GOD!' he shouted, jumping around. 'PRAISE GOD!'\n\nEveryone in the temple stared. 'Wait—isn't that the man who couldn't walk?!'\n\nPeter told the crowd, 'Don't look at us like WE did this! It's Jesus' power that healed him! Jesus, whom you crucified but God raised from the dead!'\n\nJesus still has power to change lives today. He might not give us what we ASK for—He gives us what we NEED!"

"characters": ["Saul/Paul", "Jesus", "Ananias"],
"narrative": "Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.\n\nAs he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?'\n\n'Who are you, Lord?' Saul asked.\n\n'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' he replied. 'Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.'\n\nThe men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.\n\nIn Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, 'Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying.'\n\n'Lord,' Ananias answered, 'I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem.'\n\nBut the Lord said to Ananias, 'Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.'\n\nThen Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, 'Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.'\n\nImmediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized.",

"title": "Peter's Vision",

"verses": ["Acts 10:1-48"],
"themes": ["Gospel for all", "Breaking barriers", "Obedience", "The Holy Spirit"],
"characters": ["Peter", "Cornelius", "God"],
"narrative": "At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. He and all his family were devout and God-fearing. One day an angel of God said to him, 'Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.'\n\nAbout noon the following day, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds.\n\nThen a voice told him, 'Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.'\n\n'Surely not, Lord!' Peter replied. 'I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.'\n\nThe voice spoke to him a second time, 'Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.'\n\nThis happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.\n\nWhile Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius arrived. The Spirit told Peter, 'Three men are looking for you. Get up and go with them. Do not hesitate, for I have sent them.'\n\nPeter went with them to Cornelius's house. He found a large gathering of people. He said to them, 'You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.'\n\nWhile Peter was speaking about Jesus, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The Jewish believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.\n\nPeter said, 'Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.' So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.",

They didn't visit non-Jewish people (called Gentiles).\n\nBut God was about to teach Peter something new!\n\nOne day, a Roman soldier named Cornelius had a vision. An angel told him, 'Send for a man named Peter!'\n\nCornelius sent his servants right away.\n\nMeanwhile, Peter was praying on a rooftop. He got hungry. Then he saw a strange vision—a big sheet coming down from heaven, full of animals!\n\nA voice said, 'Get up, Peter! Kill something and eat!'\n\nPeter saw animals that Jewish people weren't supposed to eat. 'No way, Lord! I've NEVER eaten anything unclean!'\n\nThe voice said, 'Don't call anything unclean if GOD has made it clean!'\n\nThis happened THREE times. Peter was confused. What did it mean?\n\nJust then, Cornelius's servants arrived. 'Will you come to our master's house?'\n\nThe Holy Spirit told Peter, 'Go with them. I sent them.'\n\nPeter went to Cornelius's house—something a Jewish person wouldn't normally do! Lots of Gentiles were there, waiting to hear about Jesus.\n\nPeter understood now! 'God has shown me that no PERSON should be called unclean! Jesus is for EVERYONE!'\n\nPeter told them about Jesus. And WOW! The Holy Spirit came on all of them—just like at Pentecost!\n\nThe other Jewish believers were amazed. 'God's gift is for Gentiles too?!'\n\nYES! God loves everyone. The good news of Jesus is for ALL people, everywhere!"

"characters": ["Paul", "Silas", "Philippian Jailer"],
"narrative": "Paul and Silas were seized and dragged into the marketplace to face the authorities. The crowd joined in the attack against them, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. He put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.\n\nAbout midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose.\n\nThe jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.\n\nBut Paul shouted, 'Don't harm yourself! We are all here!'\n\nThe jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'\n\nThey replied, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.'\n\nThen they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.",

But Paul and Silas did something surprising.\n\nAt midnight—when everything was dark and they were in pain—they started SINGING! They sang songs to God! They PRAYED!\n\nThe other prisoners listened. What kind of people sing in JAIL?!\n\nSuddenly—RUMBLE! SHAKE! An EARTHQUAKE! The whole prison shook! All the doors flew open! Everyone's chains fell off!\n\nThe jailer woke up terrified. If prisoners escaped, HE would be killed! He grabbed his sword.\n\nBut Paul yelled, 'STOP! Don't hurt yourself! We're ALL still here!'\n\nThe jailer couldn't believe it. The doors were open, but no one ran away?!\n\nHe ran to Paul and Silas and fell on his knees. 'What must I do to be SAVED?'\n\nPaul said, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you AND your family!'\n\nThat very night, the jailer washed their wounds. Paul and Silas told his whole family about Jesus. They ALL believed and were baptized!\n\nThe jailer was SO happy! "verses": ["Acts 27:1-44"],
"themes": ["God's faithfulness", "Courage", "Providence", "Mission"],
"characters": ["Paul", "Julius the centurion", "Sailors", "Soldiers"],
"narrative": "Paul was being sent to Rome as a prisoner. The voyage was difficult from the start. Paul warned them, 'Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous.' But the centurion followed the advice of the pilot instead.\n\nBefore very long, a wind of hurricane force swept down from the island. The ship was caught by the storm. They passed ropes under the ship itself to hold it together. They threw the cargo overboard. On the third day, they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands. When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, they finally gave up all hope of being saved.\n\nAfter they had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up and said, 'Men, you should have taken my advice. But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong stood beside me and said, \"Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.\" So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.'\n\nOn the fourteenth night, the sailors sensed they were approaching land. Fearing they would be dashed against the rocks, they dropped four anchors and prayed for daylight.\n\nWhen daylight came, they saw a bay with a sandy beach. They cut loose the anchors, hoisted the foresail, and made for the beach. But the ship struck a sandbar and ran aground. The bow stuck fast and the stern was broken to pieces by the pounding of the surf.\n\nThe soldiers planned to kill the prisoners to prevent any from swimming away and escaping. But the centurion wanted to spare Paul's life and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land. The rest were to get there on planks or on pieces of the ship.\n\nIn this way everyone reached land safely—all 276 of them, just as God had promised.",

The ship was tossed around like a toy!\n\nFor DAYS the storm raged. They couldn't see the sun. They couldn't see the stars. They threw cargo overboard to make the ship lighter. Everyone thought they were going to die.\n\nBut then Paul stood up. 'Don't give up hope! Last night, an angel from God visited me. The angel said, \"Don't be afraid, Paul. You WILL make it to Rome. And God is going to save EVERYONE on this ship!\" So cheer up! I believe God!'\n\nOn the fourteenth night, they got close to land. But CRASH! The ship hit a sandbar and got stuck! "characters": ["Philip", "Ethiopian Eunuch", "Angel of the Lord"],
"narrative": "The angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, directing him to arise and journey toward Gaza along the desert road. This divine appointment was no accident—God was orchestrating a meeting that would carry the gospel into Africa. Philip obeyed immediately.\n\nAs Philip drew near, he encountered a man of great authority: an Ethiopian eunuch, a treasurer under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This official had traveled hundreds of miles to worship in Jerusalem. Returning homeward in his chariot, he was reading from the prophet Isaiah.\n\nThe Spirit prompted Philip to join himself to the chariot. Philip heard the eunuch reading aloud and asked, 'Understandest thou what thou readest?' The eunuch's response revealed humility: 'How can I, except some man should guide me?'\n\nPhilip began at that very scripture—Isaiah 53:7-8—and preached unto him Jesus. As they journeyed, they came upon water, and the eunuch said, 'See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?' Philip answered that if he believed with all his heart, he might. The eunuch confessed, 'I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.'\n\nThey went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, and the eunuch saw him no more—yet he went on his way rejoicing.",

As he walked along the dusty desert road, he saw a fancy chariot. Inside sat a very important man from Ethiopia. He was the queen's treasurer!\n\nThe Ethiopian man was reading from the book of Isaiah. God's Spirit whispered to Philip, 'Go over and walk beside that chariot.' When Philip got close, he heard the man reading out loud about a sheep being led to be killed.\n\nPhilip asked, 'Do you understand what you're reading?' The man said, 'How can I unless someone helps me? Please, come sit with me and explain it!'\n\nPhilip climbed into the chariot and said, 'This is talking about Jesus! Let me tell you all about Him.' Philip explained how Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again.\n\nAs they traveled, they came to some water. The man got excited and said, 'Look! There's water! Can I be baptized right now?' Philip said, 'Yes, if you believe in Jesus with all your heart.' The man answered, 'I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God!'\n\nThey both went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. Then something amazing happened! God's Spirit suddenly took Philip away to another place. The Ethiopian man couldn't see Philip anymore, but he was so happy that he kept traveling home with a big smile, rejoicing because he now knew Jesus!"

This woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did, particularly ministering to the widows and poor of the community.\n\nIn those days, Dorcas fell sick and died. After washing her body, they laid her in an upper chamber. The believers heard that Peter was nearby in Lydda and sent two men with an urgent plea: 'Delay not to come to us.'\n\nPeter arose and accompanied them. Upon arriving, they brought him to the upper room. The widows stood by him weeping, showing the coats and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them.\n\nPeter put them all forth and knelt down and prayed. After prayer, he turned to the body and said, 'Tabitha, arise.' She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. Peter gave her his hand and lifted her up, then called the saints and widows to present her alive.\n\nThe news spread throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. The resurrection of Dorcas became a powerful testimony to Christ's victory over death.",

The people who loved her were so sad! Then someone remembered that Peter was in a nearby town. They quickly sent two men to find Peter.\n\nPeter didn't wait even a minute. He went straight to Joppa and hurried to the upstairs room. Many widows were standing around crying. They were holding up the coats and dresses that Dorcas had made for them with her own hands.\n\nPeter asked everyone to leave the room. Then he got down on his knees and prayed to God. After he finished praying, Peter said in a strong voice, 'Tabitha, arise!' That means, 'Dorcas, get up!'\n\nSomething wonderful happened—Dorcas opened her eyes! They instructed the congregation to look among themselves for seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom they might appoint over this business.\n\nThe saying pleased the whole multitude. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, along with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas. The seven were set before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands upon them.\n\nThe result was immediate and powerful—the word of God increased, the number of disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly, and even a great company of the priests became obedient to the faith.",

"kids_narrative": "The church in Jerusalem was growing bigger and bigger every day! This was wonderful, but it also created a problem. The church was helping widows by giving them food every day. But some of the widows weren't getting their fair share.\n\nThe twelve apostles called everyone together for a meeting. They said, 'We have an important job that God gave us: to pray and to teach people about Jesus. If we spend all our time handing out food, we won't have time to do what God called us to do. So here's what we should do: You choose seven good men who are honest, wise, and full of God's Holy Spirit. We'll put them in charge of making sure the food gets shared fairly.'\n\nEveryone thought this was a great idea! They chose seven men who loved God and whom everyone trusted. Their names were Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas.\n\nThe apostles put their hands on each man's head and prayed for them. This was a special ceremony that showed everyone that these men were now official helpers in the church.\n\nSomething amazing happened! Because the apostles could now spend more time praying and teaching about Jesus, God's word spread even faster. More and more people kept becoming believers—even many of the Jewish priests started believing in Jesus! The church learned that when everyone uses their gifts to help, the whole church grows stronger."

They were of one heart and one soul, neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had all things common.\n\nThe apostles gave witness with great power to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. Neither was there any among them that lacked, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them and brought the prices and laid them down at the apostles' feet.\n\nAmong these generous believers, one man stood out. Joses, a Levite from Cyprus, was surnamed by the apostles 'Barnabas,' which means 'the son of consolation' or 'son of encouragement.' His new name revealed his character—this was a man who built others up.\n\nBarnabas, having land, sold it and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet. His gift was substantial—land represented security, inheritance, and status. Yet Barnabas valued the kingdom of God above earthly security. His example of generosity and encouragement would extend far beyond this gift—he would later encourage the church to receive the converted Saul and support John Mark when others wanted to abandon him.",

If someone needed food, clothes, or a place to stay, other believers would help.\n\nThere was one special man named Joses, but everyone called him by a nickname: Barnabas. That nickname meant 'son of encouragement' because Barnabas was always saying kind things to people and helping them feel better.\n\nBarnabas owned some land, which was very valuable. But Barnabas loved Jesus and his church family more than he loved money or land. One day, Barnabas made a big decision. He sold his land and got a lot of money for it. But instead of keeping the money for himself, do you know what he did? He took all that money and brought it to the apostles! He laid it right at their feet, saying, 'This isn't mine anymore—use it to help people who need it.'\n\nBarnabas's gift helped many people in the church. But even more than the money, Barnabas's generous heart encouraged everyone else! When people saw how much Barnabas loved and trusted God, they wanted to be generous too. Barnabas showed everyone that when you really love Jesus, you want to share what you have and help others."

He did great wonders and miracles among the people, speaking with wisdom and the Spirit that none could resist. His boldness stirred up opposition from certain synagogues, who suborned men to bring false accusations against him, claiming he spoke blasphemous words against Moses and against God.\n\nBrought before the council, Stephen's face shone like the face of an angel as he stood accused. When asked if these things were true, he delivered a masterful speech recounting the entire history of Israel, from Abraham through Moses, Solomon's temple, and the prophets. He demonstrated deep knowledge of Scripture and God's dealings with His people throughout the ages.\n\nStephen's speech built to a devastating climax as he turned the tables on his accusers: 'Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.' He accused them of betraying and murdering the Just One, Jesus Christ, just as their fathers had persecuted the prophets. His words cut them to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth in fury.\n\nBut Stephen, full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. He declared this vision aloud, which drove his accusers into a rage. They cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord. They cast him out of the city and stoned him, with the witnesses laying down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.\n\nAs the stones rained down upon him, Stephen called upon God, saying, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' Then he kneeled down and cried with a loud voice, 'Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.' With these words of forgiveness echoing Christ's own words from the cross, Stephen gave up the ghost, becoming the first martyr of the Christian faith and setting an example of faithful witness unto death.",

God gave him power to do miracles and speak wise words about Jesus. Wherever Stephen went, he told people the Good News, and many people listened to his wonderful words.\n\nBut some people didn't like what Stephen was saying about Jesus. They told lies about him and brought him before the important leaders. When Stephen stood in front of them, his face glowed like an angel! He wasn't scared at all because God was with him. The leaders asked him, 'Are these bad things they say about you true?'\n\nStephen gave them a long answer, telling them the whole story of God's people from the beginning. He talked about Abraham, Joseph, Moses, and all the prophets. Then he told them something they didn't want to hear: 'You're acting just like your ancestors who hurt God's prophets. And now you've hurt Jesus, God's Son!' This made the leaders very, very angry.\n\nWhile they yelled at him, something amazing happened! Stephen looked up to heaven and saw God's glory. He saw Jesus standing at God's right hand! 'Look!' he said. 'I can see heaven and Jesus!' But the angry people didn't want to hear this. They covered their ears, shouted loudly, and dragged Stephen outside the city.\n\nThe people threw stones at Stephen, but he did something incredible. Just like Jesus did on the cross, Stephen prayed for the people hurting him! He said, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit' and 'Lord, don't hold this sin against them.' Then he went to be with Jesus in heaven. Stephen was the first person to die for believing in Jesus, and he showed everyone how to be brave and loving, even when things are scary. "narrative": "In the early church at Jerusalem, believers were of one heart and soul, sharing their possessions freely. Many sold their lands and houses, bringing the money to the apostles' feet for distribution to those in need. Into this atmosphere of radical generosity came Ananias and his wife Sapphira, who sold a possession of their own.\n\nBut Ananias, with his wife's full knowledge and consent, kept back part of the price for themselves while bringing the remainder to the apostles, presenting it as if it were the full amount. This was not merely a private financial decision but a deliberate deception before God and the church. They wanted the recognition that came with generous giving without the actual sacrifice.\n\nWhen Ananias laid the money at Peter's feet, the apostle, filled with discernment from the Holy Spirit, confronted him directly: 'Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?' Peter made clear that the sin was not in keeping some money, which was their right, but in lying about it. 'Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power?' Peter asked. 'Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.'\n\nUpon hearing these words, Ananias fell down immediately and gave up the ghost. Great fear came upon all who heard these things. Young men arose, wrapped his body, carried him out, and buried him. About three hours later, Sapphira entered, not knowing what had happened to her husband. Peter gave her an opportunity to tell the truth: 'Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much?' pointing to the amount Ananias had brought. Sapphira confirmed the lie: 'Yea, for so much.'\n\nPeter pronounced judgment: 'How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.' Immediately she fell down at his feet and yielded up the ghost. The young men came in, found her dead, and carried her out to bury her beside her husband. Great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things. This sobering event demonstrated God's holiness and the seriousness of hypocrisy in the community of believers.",

"kids_narrative": "In the early church, Christians loved to share with each other. When someone needed help, others would sell their things and give the money to the apostles to share with everyone. It was beautiful to see people being so generous and kind! Everyone was helping each other like one big, happy family.\n\nA man named Ananias and his wife Sapphira decided to sell some land they owned. That was a nice thing to do! But then they came up with a sneaky plan. They would keep some of the money for themselves, but tell everyone they were giving it all. They wanted people to think they were super generous, even though they really weren't. They both agreed to lie together.\n\nWhen Ananias brought the money to Peter, he pretended it was all the money from the sale. But Peter knew the truth because the Holy Spirit told him! Peter asked Ananias, 'Why did you let Satan fill your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit? The land was yours. The money was yours. You didn't have to give it all. But why did you lie about it? You didn't just lie to people; you lied to God!' When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died right there. Everyone was shocked and scared!\n\nThree hours later, Sapphira came in. She didn't know what had happened to her husband. Peter gave her a chance to tell the truth. He asked, 'Did you sell the land for this amount?' pointing to the money Ananias had brought. Sapphira could have been honest, but she chose to keep lying. 'Yes,' she said, 'that's how much we sold it for.' Peter said, 'How could you and your husband agree to test God's Spirit? The men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out too.' Immediately, Sapphira fell down and died, just like her husband.\n\nThis was a very serious and sad story. God showed everyone in the church that lying is very, very serious, especially lying to Him. God sees everything, even our secret plans and our hearts. The whole church became afraid and learned an important lesson: always tell the truth and be honest, especially with God. God doesn't need our lies or our fake goodness. He wants our honest hearts, even if we're not perfect. It's always better to be truthful than to pretend to be something we're not."

When he saw this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter during the days of unleavened bread, intending to bring him forth to the people after Easter. Herod delivered Peter to four quaternions of soldiers to guard him, sixteen men in total taking turns, understanding the supernatural nature of the prisoner he held.\n\nWhile Peter was kept in prison between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with keepers before the door, the church made prayer without ceasing unto God for him. The night before Herod would bring him forth, Peter slept between two soldiers, bound with two chains. Suddenly the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison. The angel smote Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, 'Arise up quickly.' His chains fell off from his hands.\n\nThe angel instructed Peter: 'Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals.' Peter did so. Then the angel said, 'Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.' Peter went out following the angel, thinking he was seeing a vision, not understanding that it was real. They passed the first and second ward, then came to the iron gate leading to the city, which opened to them of its own accord. They went out and passed through one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.\n\nWhen Peter came to himself, he declared, 'Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.' He came to the house of Mary the mother of John Mark, where many were gathered together praying. When he knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel named Rhoda came to hearken. Recognizing Peter's voice, she was so glad that she ran in without opening the gate, telling them Peter stood before the gate.\n\nThey said unto her, 'Thou art mad.' But she constantly affirmed it was so. Then they said, 'It is his angel.' But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. He beckoned unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared how the Lord had brought him out of the prison, and told them to show these things unto James and the brethren. Then he departed and went to another place. When day came, there was no small stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter. Herod sought for him and found him not, examined the keepers, and commanded they should be put to death, showing that no earthly power could thwart God's purposes for His servant.",

When he saw that this made some people happy, he arrested Peter too! He put Peter in prison with sixteen soldiers guarding him. Peter was chained between two soldiers, with even more guards at the door. Herod planned to hurt Peter after the Passover festival. It looked like there was no way Peter could escape!\n\nBut Peter's friends in the church didn't give up. They gathered together at a house and prayed and prayed for Peter. They prayed all the time, day and night! They believed God could help Peter, even though the situation looked impossible. Meanwhile, Peter was sleeping in his chains the night before Herod planned to bring him out. Can you imagine sleeping when you're in such danger? Peter must have had great peace from God!\n\nSuddenly, the whole prison cell lit up with a bright light! An angel appeared and tapped Peter on the side. 'Quick, get up!' the angel said. The chains fell right off Peter's hands! Peter thought he was dreaming. The angel told him, 'Put on your sandals and your coat, and follow me.' Peter obeyed, following the angel past the first guard, past the second guard, and then to the big iron gate that led to the city. The gate opened all by itself! They walked down the street, and then the angel disappeared.\n\nPeter finally realized, 'Wow! This is really happening! God sent an angel to rescue me from Herod!' He hurried to the house where his friends were praying. When he knocked on the door, a servant girl named Rhoda came to see who it was. She recognized Peter's voice and got so excited that she ran back inside without even opening the door! 'Peter is here!' she shouted. But everyone said, 'You're crazy! Peter is in prison!' 'No, it's really him!' Rhoda insisted. Peter kept knocking and knocking.\n\nFinally, they opened the door, and there was Peter! They were absolutely amazed! Peter told them to be quiet and explained how God's angel had led him right out of the prison. The next morning, the soldiers woke up and couldn't find Peter anywhere. They were so confused! King Herod was very angry, but there was nothing he could do. God had answered the prayers of the church in the most amazing way. "verses": ["Acts 17:16-34"],
"themes": ["Evangelism", "Truth", "Idolatry", "Resurrection"],
"characters": ["Paul", "Athenian Philosophers", "Dionysius", "Damaris"],
"narrative": "While Paul waited at Athens for Silas and Timothy, his spirit was stirred in him when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Athens, the intellectual and cultural center of the ancient world, was filled with temples, shrines, and statues to countless gods. Paul disputed in the synagogue with the Jews and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him, engaging whoever would listen in discussion about Jesus and the resurrection.\n\nCertain philosophers of the Epicureans and of the Stoicks encountered him. The Epicureans sought pleasure and tranquility, denying divine intervention in human affairs. The Stoics believed in fate and living according to reason and nature. Some said, 'What will this babbler say?' dismissing him as a collector of scraps of knowledge. Others said, 'He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods,' because he preached unto them Jesus and the resurrection. They took him and brought him unto Areopagus, or Mars Hill, the council that dealt with religious and philosophical matters in Athens.\n\nThey asked, 'May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.' Luke notes that all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing. Their intellectual curiosity provided Paul with an opportunity to present the gospel in terms they could engage with.\n\nPaul stood in the midst of Mars Hill and began his address: 'Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.' He had observed an altar with the inscription, 'TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.' He declared, 'Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.' Paul then proclaimed the one true God: 'God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things.' He dismantled their idolatrous conceptions, showing that the Creator needs nothing from His creatures.\n\nPaul continued, explaining that God made all nations from one blood and determined their times and boundaries, 'That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being.' He even quoted their own poets: 'For we are also his offspring.' Then Paul applied this truth: 'Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.' Their idols were inadequate representations of the divine.\n\nPaul reached his climax: 'The times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.' When they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, but others said, 'We will hear thee again of this matter.' Some men joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a member of the council, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them. Paul's Mars Hill sermon demonstrated how to engage thoughtfully with philosophical minds while faithfully proclaiming Christ crucified and risen.",
"kids_title": "Paul Tells the Smart Greeks About the Real God",
"kids_description": "In a city full of statues to fake gods, Paul told the wise people of Athens about the one true God who made everything and raised Jesus from the dead.",
"kids_narrative": "Paul arrived in the great city of Athens, the smartest city in the whole world! It was famous for its philosophers - very smart people who spent all their time thinking and talking about big ideas. But when Paul looked around the city, he became very sad. Everywhere he looked, he saw statues and temples to fake gods! The people worshiped hundreds of different idols. Paul knew there was only one true God, and these people didn't know Him.\n\nPaul started talking to people in the marketplace every day about Jesus. Some smart philosophers called Epicureans and Stoics heard him and were curious. 'What is this babbler talking about?' some said. 'He seems to be telling us about strange new gods!' They brought Paul to a special place called the Areopagus, also known as Mars Hill, where important people met to discuss new ideas. 'Tell us about this new teaching,' they said. 'We want to know what you're talking about!'\n\nPaul stood up in front of all these very smart people and began to speak. 'Men of Athens,' he said, 'I can see that you are very religious. As I walked around your city, I saw many objects you worship, and I even found an altar with these words: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Well, I'm here to tell you about this God you don't know!' Paul was using something they already had to teach them the truth. How clever!\n\nPaul told them, 'The God who made the whole world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth. He doesn't live in temples made by human hands, and He doesn't need anything from us. Instead, He gives everyone life and breath and everything else! He made all people from one man, and He wants people to seek Him and find Him. In fact, He's not far from any of us! As your own poets have said, \"We are His offspring.\"' Paul was showing them that the real God is nothing like their statues made of gold, silver, or stone.\n\nThen Paul said something very important: 'God overlooked people's ignorance in the past, but now He commands everyone everywhere to repent and turn from their sins. He has set a day when He will judge the world through a man He has chosen - Jesus. And God proved this by raising Jesus from the dead!' When the people heard about someone rising from the dead, some laughed and made fun of Paul. But others said, 'We want to hear more about this!' And some people believed! A man named Dionysius, who was an important council member, and a woman named Damaris, and others became followers of Jesus that day. Paul showed us that we can be wise and smart while still sharing the truth about Jesus with everyone!"
