If they have to introduce 100 characters in the first show and you don't do a good job of it, its still bad story telling.  You guys have read the books you know the characters and that is making you see characters that haven't developed in the show yet.  The problem is half those names that you listed off I don't even know.  It's because they spent the first episode showing a glimpse of 100 charcters instead of really focusing on 5 and introducing them well.  Compare it to the wire, that had a lot of characters.  You watch the first episode, and the characters are memorable and you already start to know them.  And if you say that I can't compare it to the wire because thats not fair, well to that I would respond that they attempted to tell a story with an intricate web of characters, so they can be held accountable when they do it poorly.  I'm still going to watch the show, but reading the books shouldn't be a prerequisite.
