The uploaded files were multimedia and customers were led to believe the files were private. Anyone who googled the search terms I had (which included site:amazonaws.com), had access to tens of thousands of multimedia files which included many business conversations. (I deduced this after playing a representative sample.) Since I was considering becoming a competitor in this space, I didn't run to assist the market leader in improving the security of their service. Now that I've moved on to a different startup idea, I should email that company in case they're unaware how insecure their customers' files are. That said, it's been over a year and they may have fixed the issue - plus I'd have to research again to find the second google search term which I've since forgotten.
