I built a test stand for one of the world's first digital hearing aids.  It combined Pascal/Assembly with signal analysis (stuff like Fourier transforms and filters). There was even a section of assembly code that executed between samples.  I had to count clock cycles there to make sure the code completed before the next sample was taken.  Then I graphed results and had a whole menu-driven process to test and analyze the aids.  I did that in the summer in about 3 months as an intern.  In the end, it all worked.
