I must also add that even the first time I read GRRM was some years after I'd mostly abandoned the genre.\n\nWhile I haven't read any Robin Hobb (that I can remember), the two authors that immediately sprung to mind the first time I read Song of Ice and Fire were Melanie Rawn and Katherine Kerr.  Where by \"sprung to mind\" I mean that they share certain elements of GRRM's work \u2014\u00a0specifically, a vast cast and a focus on multi-faceted political intrigue (the \"soap opera\" elements, if you will).  Very different from the\u2026\u00a0adventure/exploration-focused fantasy that authors like Feist based on Tolkien's original work.\n\nIncidentally, both Rawn and Kerr's also feature a world where dragons had once been a socio-political (and zoological!) reality, but for are now forgotten\u2026\u00a0though you just know you'll see them again before the end.  (Mind you, the similarity i.t.o. dragons is really just a chance similarity of a plot point, and not really a reason to compare their work with GRRM's.)\n\nRawn's Dragon Prince books are probably the closest I've read in \"feel\" to GRRM's.  They're OK, but I wasn't a vast fan when I read them, and even today I wouldn't put them quite in the same league as GRRM.\n\nKerr's Deverry novels, on the other hand, are pretty excellent.  Possibly among the better works I've read in the pure heroic fantasy genre \u2014\u00a0easily better than either Melanie Rawn or George R. R. Martin.
