Second, Readability has lots of regular, non-geek users who have the bookmarklet and use it on sites for legibility reasons, etc. Those folks are a broader audience than the hardcore Instapaper users. And the idea behind the payment model is to make something publishers like and work with, instead of getting in to some sort of blocking war with them.
