kennethreitz ce93f429a2 Add Knowledge: the vault's reference shelf, crosslinked across the site
Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# Hermes Trismegistus
> *Thrice-great — the mythic father of alchemy, astrology, and theurgy.*
Hermes Trismegistus is not a historical person. He's a syncretic fusion of the Greek [Hermes](/knowledge/mythology/greek-mythology/hermes) (messenger of the gods, psychopomp, guide between worlds) and the Egyptian Thoth (god of writing, wisdom, magic, and the moon). The "Trismegistus" — thrice-great — honors his mastery of three domains: alchemy, astrology, and theurgy (divine magic). Whether he ever existed is beside the point. The texts attributed to him created a tradition that shaped Western esotericism for two thousand years.
The **Corpus Hermeticum**, a collection of Greek-Egyptian philosophical dialogues written between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE, forms the core Hermetic library. These texts present a worldview where the cosmos is alive, mind pervades all things, and the human soul can ascend to divine knowledge through disciplined practice. They were rediscovered by Cosimo de' Medici in 1460 and translated by Marsilio Ficino, igniting the Renaissance obsession with ancient wisdom.
The **Emerald Tablet** (Tabula Smaragdina) is the most famous Hermetic text — a short, dense statement of alchemical principles traditionally attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. Its opening line became the motto of the entire tradition: *"As above, so below; as below, so above."* The Principle of Correspondence. What happens in the macrocosm mirrors the microcosm. What's true of the stars is true of the soul. What's true of the atom is true of the universe. The Kybalion elaborates this into seven principles. [Sacred Infrastructure](/essays/2025-12-23-sacred_infrastructure) applies it to roads, hospitals, and the internet.
The figure of Hermes Trismegistus matters to Kenneth's work in multiple registers. In System 777, [Hermes](/knowledge/mythology/greek-mythology/hermes) is an alter — herald, messenger, the one who sings "hark the herald!" The Hermetic tradition of correspondence — patterns repeating across scales — is the structural intuition behind the Algorithm Eats series, the consciousness-as-linguistic-phenomenon framework, and the conviction that code and spirituality are the same thing expressed in different languages. [Thoth](/knowledge/mythology/egyptian-mythology/thoth), keeper of visions and measurer of datum, is another alter carrying this lineage.
The alchemical tradition that Hermes founded wasn't chemistry. It was a technology of the soul, encoded in the language of matter so it could survive centuries of religious persecution. The lab was the cover story. The Great Work was always [inner transformation](/knowledge/alchemy/the-magnum-opus).
