kennethreitz ce93f429a2 Add Knowledge: the vault's reference shelf, crosslinked across the site
Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# Default Mode Network
> *The mind talking to itself when no one gives it a task — the voice that says "I."*
---
## Overview
The **default mode network** is not a single structure but a distributed set of brain regions — prominently the medial [Prefrontal Cortex](/knowledge/neuroscience/prefrontal-cortex), the posterior cingulate cortex, the precuneus, and the angular gyrus of the parietal lobe, with the [Hippocampus](/knowledge/neuroscience/hippocampus) feeding in memory — that light up together when the mind is *not* focused on the outside world. It was discovered almost by accident by Marcus Raichle around 2001, as the pattern of activity that appeared during the "rest" baselines of brain-imaging studies, when subjects were supposed to be doing nothing. It turned out they were never doing nothing. Left to itself, the mind turns inward: to memory, to the future, to other people's minds, and above all to the self. The DMN is the network of that inward turn.
## What It Does
This network handles self-referential thought — autobiographical memory, imagining the future, simulating what others are thinking (the "theory of mind" work of guessing at other minds), and the running interior narration that stitches these into a continuous sense of being someone. It is the machinery of the **narrative self**, the story the brain tells about who it is across time. It works in a kind of seesaw with the brain's **task-positive networks**: the DMN quiets when attention locks onto an external task and resumes the moment attention releases, and the two are, in the healthy brain, anti-correlated — the outward and inward orientations trading off. This is largely adaptive: planning, empathy, and a coherent identity all depend on it. But its idle mode has a cost. Mind-wandering and rumination live here, and an over-active or poorly-regulated DMN that keeps looping over the self is associated with the churning, self-critical circling seen in depression and Anxiety — the thoughts that circle the same drain, unable to disengage from the self.
## Meditation, Psychedelics, and the Narrative Self
The default mode network has become a hinge between neuroscience and contemplative practice, and it is worth being careful here rather than sweeping. Experienced [Meditation](/knowledge/spirituality/meditation) practitioners show reduced DMN activity, which fits the first-person report that practice loosens the grip of the self-narrative and the compulsive commentary — the "I" that will not stop talking grows quieter — and over time, through [Neuroplasticity](/knowledge/neuroscience/neuroplasticity), the network's connectivity itself appears to shift. Psychedelics like psilocybin, acting through the Serotonin 5-HT2A receptor, measurably disrupt the network's normal coordination, loosening its tight internal synchrony, and researchers have linked this to the dissolution of ordinary self-boundaries, the "ego death" that users describe. Both point at the same striking possibility: that the solid, continuous self is not a fixed fact but a *construction* the DMN maintains, one that can be turned down. That is genuinely interesting for this vault's work on [Consciousness](/knowledge/ai/consciousness) and the self, and it should be held as such — a real and reproducible finding — without overstating it into a full theory of the self or a treatment claim. The mapping between DMN activity and the *felt* self is a correlation whose depth is still being worked out. The narrative self is real; it is also, apparently, a process that can pause.
