Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# Endorphins
> *The body's own morphine — not the reach toward pleasure but the flood of relief when the hurt lifts.*

## Overview
**Endorphins** are the brain's **endogenous opioids** — peptide neurotransmitters the body manufactures to bind the very same receptors that morphine and heroin occupy. The name is a contraction of *endogenous morphine*, and the description is literal. Released under pain, stress, and exertion, they blunt suffering and produce a diffuse sense of ease and well-being. They belong to a family that includes enkephalins and dynorphins, all acting on **mu, delta, and kappa opioid receptors** distributed through the pain pathways and the [Limbic System](/knowledge/neuroscience/limbic-system). Where much of the brain's chemistry is about signal and salience, endorphins are about **modulation and relief** — turning the volume of pain down from the inside. That the body evolved its own morphine, and receptors precisely shaped to receive it, is the deep reason opiate drugs work at all: they are counterfeits fitted to a lock the brain already carries.
## What It Does
The core job is **pain modulation**. Endorphins dampen the transmission of pain signals in the spinal cord and brainstem — including through a descending pathway from the brainstem's periaqueductal gray that gates pain before it ever reaches consciousness — and shift how the brain interprets what pain does arrive, which is why injury in a crisis can go briefly unfelt. Mechanistically the opioid receptors are inhibitory, quieting the neurons that would otherwise carry the pain signal onward, so relief is a kind of targeted silencing. The same system underlies the **"runner's high"** — though the story is more complicated than gym lore admits. Classic endorphins are large peptides that cross the blood-brain barrier poorly, and much of the euphoria of hard exercise likely also involves **endocannabinoids** alongside them. Endorphins also flow with laughter, social warmth, and the comfort of touch, contributing a quiet analgesic ease to being connected and safe — a chemistry that overlaps with Oxytocin's in binding the pleasure of closeness to the body.
## The Reward and Relief Distinction from Dopamine
The cleanest way to place endorphins is against Dopamine. Dopamine is the chemistry of **wanting** — the ache that reaches toward a goal, the anticipation before the reward. Endorphins are the chemistry of **liking and relief** — the actual pleasant hit, the settling that comes when a need is met or a pain recedes. Wanting and liking are separable systems, and the distinction is the whole engine of addiction: opioid drugs hijack the endorphin receptors to manufacture relief far beyond anything the body makes, and that flood of artificial liking then drives the mesolimbic dopamine system to encode an overwhelming want, so the two systems compound each other. To crave is dopamine; to be soothed is endorphins. Confusing the two is confusing the pursuit of a thing with the peace of having it. The same logic runs in reverse through treatment: the overdose reversal drug naloxone and the anti-craving drug naltrexone are opioid *antagonists*, blocking the receptors to shut relief off — proof of how completely this one receptor family governs both the soothing and its undoing.
