kennethreitz ce93f429a2 Add Knowledge: the vault's reference shelf, crosslinked across the site
Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# The Self
**Jungian Concept**: The archetype of wholeness and the regulating center of the psyche
---
## Definition
The Self is the central archetype in Jungian psychology, representing the totality of the conscious and unconscious psyche. It is both the center and the circumference of the personality — the organizing principle that unifies all aspects of the psyche. In the tarot this archetype is imaged twice over: as [The World](/knowledge/tarot/major-arcana/the-world), wholeness achieved and the dance completed, and as [The Sun](/knowledge/tarot/major-arcana/the-sun), the integrated self radiant and unclouded.
---
## Key Aspects
### The Totality
The Self encompasses all of consciousness and unconsciousness, includes all archetypes, complexes, and psychological functions — the whole personality, not just what we're aware of.
### The Regulating Center
It organizes and integrates the personality, brings order to psychological chaos, and drives the individuation process.
### The Goal
The Self is both the starting point and the goal of development. Already present from birth, it must be realized — made conscious through individuation.
---
## Relationship to the Ego
### Ego vs Self
The **ego** is the center of consciousness, the "I" identity. The **Self** is the center of the total personality, conscious and unconscious together. Ego is a subset within the larger Self.
### Healthy Relationship
In proper balance, the ego serves the Self and the Self guides the ego. Dialogue between the two flows through dreams, intuition, and synchronicity.
### Problems
**Ego inflation** means identifying the ego with the Self. **Self-alienation** means the ego is cut off from the Self. **Grandiosity** means believing "I am God" rather than understanding that you contain the divine.
---
## Symbols of the Self
### In Dreams & Visions
Mandalas (circles, squares, quaternity), the divine child, the wise old man or woman, a supreme being or deity, wholeness symbols (circles, spheres, jewels), and the number four (quaternity).
### Religious Expressions
God or the divine. Buddha nature. Christ consciousness. Atman (Hinduism). The Tao. Each tradition's ultimate reality points toward the same archetype.
---
## Development & Realization
### Early Life
The Self is the original totality. The child lives closer to the Self. Ego gradually differentiates.
### First Half of Life
Ego development and strengthening. Building persona and identity. Necessary separation from the Self.
### Second Half of Life
Return to the Self. Integrating what was left behind. Realizing wholeness. Individuation becomes primary.
---
## Self-Realization
Self-realization is **not** ego accomplishment or success, not perfection or eliminating flaws, not becoming special or superior.
It **is** becoming who you truly are — integration of conscious and unconscious, living from your center, accepting your wholeness including both light and shadow.
---
## Practical Experience
### Signs of Self-Connection
A sense of inner guidance, meaningful coincidences (synchronicity), dreams with powerful imagery, feeling of being "on your path," and inner peace despite outer chaos.
### Disconnection from Self
Feeling lost or meaningless, living only for external validation, chronic emptiness, identity crisis, neurosis and psychological distress.
---
## Self in Creativity
Creative work emerges from the Self. Art is dialogue between ego and Self. The Self expresses through symbols and images. Authentic expression versus ego-driven creation.
