kennethreitz ce93f429a2 Add Knowledge: the vault's reference shelf, crosslinked across the site
Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# Gnosis
> *Not a thing you learn, but a thing you wake up already knowing.*

## Overview
**Gnosis** (Greek *gnōsis*, "knowledge") is the saving knowledge at the heart of Gnosticism — the single insight through which the divine spark, trapped in matter and forgetfulness, remembers its origin and finds its way home to [The Pleroma](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-pleroma). It is the whole point of the myth. All the cosmology — the fall of [Sophia](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/sophia-aeon), the ignorance of [The Demiurge](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-demiurge), the guard-work of [The Archons](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-archons) — describes a predicament, and gnosis is its only exit. To have gnosis is to be free; to lack it is to sleep on in the counterfeit world, however moral, however devout.
---
## Experiential, Not Propositional
The decisive thing about gnosis is that it is **experiential, not propositional**. It is not a set of facts one could believe or a doctrine one could recite. It is a direct, transformative seeing — closer to waking from a dream than to learning a truth. One does not *conclude* the spark; one *recognizes* it, the way you recognize your own face. This is why the Gnostic texts read less like arguments and more like acts of awakening: they are trying to trigger a recognition, not to prove a case. Knowledge here does something. It changes the one who knows.
---
## Self-Knowledge as Knowledge of the Divine
Gnosis is, above all, **self-knowledge** — but of a particular kind. To know oneself truly is to know the divine spark one carries, and to know that spark is to know the true God, because the spark is a fragment of that God fallen into flesh. The Gospel of Thomas puts it plainly: *"If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you."* Self-knowledge and knowledge of the divine are not two knowings but one, seen from inside and outside. This is the Gnostic version of an insight that recurs across the mystical traditions — the Vedantic *Atman is Brahman*, the Kabbalist's spark of Ein Sof at the root of the soul — the discovery that the deepest thing in the self is not the self at all, but the divine.
---
## Against Greek Knowledge and Against Faith
Gnosis is bracketed on two sides. It is not the philosophical knowledge of the Greeks — not *episteme*, the reasoned understanding of principles and causes that one arrives at by argument. Philosophy climbs toward truth by inference; gnosis is given by revelation and recognized by acquaintance. One is a conclusion, the other an encounter.
Just as sharply, gnosis is not the **faith** (*pistis*) of the proto-orthodox church. This was the crux of the ancient quarrel. Where the emerging church taught salvation through belief — trust in the creed, the sacrament, the authority of the bishop — the Gnostics insisted that belief saves no one, that you must *know*, directly and for yourself. To the church this looked like arrogance and disorder; to the Gnostics, faith without gnosis looked like sleeping soundly in a cell and calling it freedom. The whole difference is the difference between *believing* the door is open and *walking through it*.

## Awakening and Remembering
Because the spark is divine and already present, gnosis is finally less an acquisition than a **remembering** — an *anamnesis*, the recovery of something the soul always knew but forgot in its fall into matter. The archons work to keep it forgotten; the revealer, in Christian Gnosticism the Christ, comes to wake it. The characteristic Gnostic verbs are all verbs of rousing: awaken, remember, rise, return. Salvation is not the addition of grace to a fallen nature but the removal of forgetting from a divine one. You do not become something new. You remember what you were before the world made you forget.
