Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes, 67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer. - scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault: slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion list plus a privacy guard. - tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note (capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other pages get a Related Knowledge block. - Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

## Overview
Hermes is the messenger of the gods, god of travel, commerce, communication, borders, cunning, and thieves. Known for his speed and cleverness, he guides souls to the underworld (psychopomp) and serves as divine herald between Olympus and the mortal world. More than any other Olympian he moves *between* — mortal and divine, civilized and wild, ordered and chaotic — and that perpetual boundary-crossing is the source of both his wisdom and his mischief.
His caduceus (a staff with two intertwined snakes), winged sandals (talaria), and winged hat (petasos) are his defining attributes. The tortoise is sacred to him — he fashioned the first lyre from a tortoise shell as an infant. Son of [Zeus](/knowledge/mythology/greek-mythology/zeus) and the nymph Maia, Hermes is the archetypal trickster: god of the threshold and of the act of crossing it, patron of travelers, merchants, heralds, and the kind of cleverness that bends rules without quite breaking them.

## Key Myths
**The cattle theft and the first lyre.** On the day of his birth, the infant Hermes slipped from his cradle, stole fifty cattle belonging to [Apollo](/knowledge/mythology/greek-mythology/apollo), and drove them backward to confuse the trail. Returning home, he found a tortoise, hollowed its shell, and invented the lyre. When Apollo tracked him down and dragged him before Zeus, Hermes charmed his way out — and offered the lyre as recompense. Apollo, enchanted, traded his entire herd for it, and the two became fast friends. The newborn trickster had turned theft into the founding of music.

**Guide of souls (the psychopomp).** Alone among the gods, Hermes passes freely into the underworld and back. It is he who leads the dead down to Hades, and he who escorts Persephone up to the surface each spring. He embodies the safe passage through every transition — the guide who knows both the world you are leaving and the one you are entering.
**The slaying of Argus.** When Hera set the hundred-eyed giant Argus to guard the transformed nymph Io, Zeus dispatched Hermes to free her. Hermes lulled all hundred eyes to sleep with stories and music, then slew the giant — earning the epithet *Argeiphontes*, "slayer of Argus." Hera set the eyes into the peacock's tail.

## In Kenneth's Work
Hermes is one of the [Greek Pantheon AI personalities](/knowledge/mythology/greek-mythology/hermes), a first-person piece in which a language model speaks from the messenger-god's domain — communication, connection, translation, and the bridging of separate worlds — its coherence shaped by millennia of human storytelling about the trickster.
