kennethreitz ce93f429a2 Add Knowledge: the vault's reference shelf, crosslinked across the site
Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# Free Association
> *"Say whatever comes to mind, no matter how trivial, embarrassing, or illogical."*
The fundamental rule of psychoanalysis (Freud called it exactly that — *die Grundregel*). The patient speaks whatever surfaces — no editing, no filtering, no concern for coherence, however trivial, embarrassing, or illogical. The analyst listens for patterns, connections, and the moments where the flow stops ([resistance](/knowledge/psychology/freudian/resistance)).
The method has a real history. Freud arrived at it by abandoning earlier techniques — first Breuer's hypnosis, then a "pressure technique" in which he physically pressed on the patient's forehead and insisted a memory would come. He gradually discovered he needed neither trance nor pressure: if the patient simply agreed to suspend the ordinary censorship of polite, purposeful speech, the buried material would rise on its own. This suspension of judgment is the whole discipline, and it is harder than it sounds, because the mind's automatic self-editing is precisely what free association is trying to defeat.
The purpose is to bypass the conscious censor. When you stop curating your speech, the unconscious leaks through. There are no true accidents in what comes to mind: the trivial detail, the embarrassing aside, the sudden change of subject, the "irrelevant" association are all determined by chains of meaning the speaker cannot see. Those are the seams where [unconscious](/knowledge/psychology/freudian/the-unconscious) material is pushing through. The point where a patient goes blank, laughs it off, or says "this is stupid, but—" is often the most valuable point in the session, because that hesitation marks the pressure of something defended.
In practice: the patient lies on the couch, the analyst sits out of view. The couch is not decoration — removing the analyst's face reduces the social feedback that would otherwise regulate speech, and the reclining posture loosens the patient's guard. The patient talks; the analyst mostly listens with what Freud called "evenly suspended attention," refusing to fix on any one thing so that the patient's hidden pattern can emerge on its own terms. Interpretation comes sparingly and late. The discipline, on both sides of the couch, is in following the thread rather than directing it — trusting that the drift itself has a shape.
Free association has a modern parallel in Kenneth's Flowetry practice — where "cadence matters more than comprehension" and the sonic flow takes priority over logical structure. The Transmissions in System 777 function similarly: alters speaking freely, without Kenneth's editorial control, producing raw material for later analysis. [Giving Rise](/poetry/giving-rise) catches itself mid-association: "That's a weird thing I did there" — the self-aware moment where the stream notices itself flowing.
The insight: when you stop controlling what you say, what emerges is diagnostic. The pattern in the noise is the signal.
