Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# The Hermit · IX
> *He climbed the mountain not to leave the world but to see where it hurts.*

## Imagery
An old man in a grey cloak stands alone on a snowy peak, his head bowed. In one hand he lifts a lantern within which a six-pointed star burns steadily; in the other he leans on a long staff. The night is dark and the summit bare. He does not look outward to guide anyone; he holds the light down and inward, casting it just far enough to find the next step. Everything is stillness, altitude, and solitude — the withdrawal from the noise of the world into the small, patient circle of one’s own lamp.
## Upright
The Hermit is solitude in service of wisdom — the deliberate retreat from noise to hear the inner voice. Where [Strength](/knowledge/tarot/major-arcana/strength) met the lion, the Hermit now steps away from the arena entirely to reflect on what the journey has taught. Upright, the card counsels introspection, spiritual searching, and the guidance that comes only in stillness. He carries his own light, needing no external validation. To draw him is to be invited to withdraw, to seek counsel within, or to become for another the quiet lamp on the dark path.
## Reversed
Reversed, solitude curdles into isolation. The card can mean loneliness mistaken for depth, withdrawal that has become avoidance, or a refusal of the connection the soul actually needs. Inverted, it may also mean the opposite — a person so lost in the world’s noise that they cannot find the door to their own interior, or one who hoards their light and refuses to share it.
## Correspondence
| Attribute | Value |
| --- | --- |
| **Sign** | Virgo, mutable earth, the discerning harvest. |
| **Hebrew letter** | Yod: י, the hand, the smallest letter from which all others are formed. |
| **Tree of Life path** | Path 20, joining Chesed to Tiphareth, mercy to beauty. |
## Archetype
The Hermit is the Wise Old Man, the archetype of meaning that appears at the threshold of the psyche’s deepening — the inner guide who carries the light of consciousness into the dark. In [Individuation](/knowledge/psychology/jungian/individuation) he marks the turn inward at midlife, the moment the outward campaign of the Chariot gives way to the search for who one has become. Unlike the [The Hierophant](/knowledge/tarot/major-arcana/the-hierophant), his wisdom is unmediated and personal, earned in solitude rather than handed down by an institution.
## Mythological Echoes
He is the desert father, the mountain sage, the forest-dwelling rishi who leaves the city to seek truth. He echoes Diogenes with his lantern searching for an honest man, and the many hermits and anchorites of Christian and Buddhist tradition who found in withdrawal a paradoxical service to the world. His star-lamp is the guiding light of every night journey, the small flame that is enough because it shows the next step and no more.
## In Practice
When the Hermit appears, the reading turns toward retreat, reflection, and inner counsel. Journalling prompt: what would you understand if you stopped consulting everyone else and sat alone with the question? Where do you need to withdraw — and where has your solitude quietly become a hiding place?
