Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# Scales & Modes
> *Seven notes, reordered seven ways — and everything that spills out past them.*
---
A **scale** is an ordered set of pitches, a ladder of intervals that defines the tonal world a piece lives in. A **mode** is what happens when you take one scale — classically the major scale — and start it on a different degree, keeping the same notes but shifting the centre of gravity. Play only the white keys from C and you get the major scale; start that same set of white keys on D and you get Dorian, on E Phrygian, and so on. The result is seven distinct colours drawn from a single source. Past the diatonic modes lie the other scales — the minors, the pentatonics, the symmetrical scales — each with its own architecture and mood. The same structures are what pytheory models in code.
---
## The Diatonic Modes
The seven rotations of the major scale, brightest to darkest:
[Lydian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/lydian) · [Ionian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/ionian) · [Mixolydian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/mixolydian) · [Dorian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/dorian) · [Aeolian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/aeolian) · [Phrygian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/phrygian) · [Locrian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/locrian)
[Ionian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/ionian) is the major scale; [Aeolian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/aeolian) is the natural minor. The rest sit between the fully bright ([Lydian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/lydian), with its raised 4th) and the fully dark ([Locrian](/knowledge/music/scales-and-modes/modes/locrian), with its flattened 2nd and 5th).
