Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# Sethian Gnosticism
> *Before the schools grew clever, there was the myth — the older, stranger story, told in the name of Seth.*

## Overview
**Sethian Gnosticism** is the older and more purely mythological of the two great Gnostic schools — the deep, archaic layer of the tradition, named for **Seth**, the third son of Adam, whom the Sethians revered as their spiritual ancestor. Where [Valentinianism](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/valentinianism) refined the myth into a churchly, philosophical system, Sethianism preserved it in its wilder, more baroque form: a sprawling cosmic drama of emanations, falls, and rescues, closer to raw revelation than to theology. It is the mythology beneath the Gnostic worldview in its most elaborate telling, and its central text — the **Apocryphon of John** — is the fullest single account of the Gnostic cosmos to survive.

## Seth as Spiritual Ancestor
The Sethians traced their spiritual lineage to **Seth**, born to Adam and Eve after the death of Abel. In their reading, Seth was not merely a third son but the vessel of a pure spiritual seed — the bearer of the divine spark passed down through a hidden generation, "the seed of Seth," an elect race of the spiritually awake set apart from the descendants of Cain and the ordinary line of flesh. To be a Sethian was to understand oneself as part of that immovable generation: the children of Seth, carriers of the light, foreigners in the demiurge's world by ancestry as much as by insight.

## The Barbelo
At the summit of the Sethian cosmos, just below the unknowable Father, stands the **Barbelo** — the first emanation, the divine Forethought (*Pronoia*), the Mother-Father who is the womb of all that follows. The Barbelo is the great distinctive of Sethian myth: a supreme feminine principle, the first thought of the invisible Spirit, from whom the aeons of the fullness proceed. She has no equivalent in the ordinary orthodox picture, and her presence gives Sethianism its characteristic cast — a cosmology in which the divine feminine stands at the very top, prior to nearly everything, the first mirror in which the hidden God beholds himself.

## The Apocryphon of John
The central text of the school is the **Apocryphon of John** (the Secret Book of John), preserved in multiple copies in [The Nag Hammadi Library](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-nag-hammadi-library) — a sign of how widely it was read. Framed as a revelation given by the risen Christ to the apostle John, it narrates the whole Sethian myth in sequence: the unknowable Father and the Barbelo; the unfolding of [The Aeons](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-aeons) through [The Pleroma](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-pleroma); the fall of [Sophia](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/sophia-aeon), who brings forth her malformed offspring alone; the birth of the arrogant [The Demiurge](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-demiurge) Yaldabaoth and his host of [The Archons](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-archons); the fashioning of the material world and of Adam; and the long work of rescuing the scattered light. It is the closest thing the tradition has to a scripture, and the reference text for the Gnostic cosmos as such.

## The Descent of the Redeemer
The Sethian drama does not end with the soul stranded in matter. Its resolution is the **descent of the redeemer** — the movement of a saving figure down from the fullness into the world of forgetting, to wake the sleeping seed of Seth and lead the light home. In the Apocryphon of John this descent belongs to the Barbelo's Forethought, who comes down three times into the darkness — the threefold Pronoia hymn — calling the sleepers to remember and rise. In Christianized versions the descending redeemer is the Christ, the revealer who brings [Gnosis](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/gnosis). Either way the shape is the same: the light must come down to the trapped light, because the trapped cannot climb out on their own. Salvation begins with a descent so that it can end in a return.
