Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes, 67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer. - scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault: slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion list plus a privacy guard. - tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note (capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other pages get a Related Knowledge block. - Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

## The Grammar of Protest
The *solas* — from the Latin *sola* or *solus*, "alone" — are the five slogans in which the Reformation compressed its theology. They were not proclaimed as a set by any single reformer; they were distilled later as a summary of what the movement affirmed and, crucially, of what it denied. Each is a word of exclusion: it takes something the medieval church held together with a partner and insists on the one alone. Scripture *alone*, not scripture and tradition. Faith *alone*, not faith and works. Grace *alone*, not grace and merit. Christ *alone*, not Christ and other mediators. Glory to God *alone*, not to God and his saints. The whole architecture of Protestant divergence from [Catholicism](/knowledge/spirituality/catholicism) can be read off these five terms.

## Sola Scriptura — Scripture Alone
Scripture alone is the final authority for faith and practice. This does not mean Protestants reject all tradition, but that tradition, councils, and church teaching stand *under* the Bible and are judged by it, never over it. Against this, Catholicism holds scripture and sacred tradition together as a single deposit of revelation, interpreted authoritatively by the church's magisterium under the Pope. The divergence is the deepest of the five, because it concerns not one doctrine but who gets to settle every doctrine. The vault's KJV Study library is itself an expression of the sola-scriptura instinct: the biblical text placed in the reader's own hands as the thing to be studied directly.

## Sola Fide — Faith Alone
A sinner is justified — declared righteous before God — by faith alone, and not by any work he performs. Justification is a legal verdict, God crediting the righteousness of Christ to the believer, received as a gift and never earned. This was Luther's incandescent insight and the doctrine on which, he said, the church stands or falls. Catholicism, at the Council of Trent, answered that justification is by grace through faith *and* is bound up with the believer's cooperation and growth in holiness; it anathematized the bare "faith alone" as it understood it. The gap narrows in some modern ecumenical dialogue but remains real, and it is felt most sharply where grace is delivered — see [The Seven Sacraments](/knowledge/spirituality/catholicism/the-seven-sacraments), which Catholicism holds to convey saving grace *ex opere operato*, by the rite itself, a claim sola fide resists.

## Sola Gratia — Grace Alone
Salvation is by grace alone — God's free, unearned favor — with no contribution from human merit at any point. Sola gratia is the engine beneath sola fide: even the faith that justifies is itself God's gift, not the sinner's achievement. This is where Protestantism runs closest to its own internal fault line, since the [Reformed](/knowledge/spirituality/calvinism) read grace as sovereign and irresistible while others allow the human will a cooperating role. But over against Rome the point is shared: grace is not a substance accumulated through a sacramental system and diminished by sin, but the sheer favor of God that saves.

## Solus Christus — Christ Alone
Christ alone is the mediator between God and humanity, the sole priest, the sole sacrifice, the sole ground of access to the Father. The Reformers pressed this against a late-medieval piety thick with intercessors — Mary, the saints, the priest at the altar — insisting that no one and nothing stands between the believer and Christ, and Christ needs no supplement. The contrast is sharpest at the altar: see [The Mass and the Eucharist](/knowledge/spirituality/catholicism/the-mass-and-the-eucharist), where Catholicism understands the Mass as the sacrifice of Christ made present and offered anew, while Protestants insist that Christ's one sacrifice on the cross was finished, sufficient, and unrepeatable.

## Soli Deo Gloria — Glory to God Alone
All glory belongs to God alone. This is the doxological seal on the other four: if salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone on the authority of scripture alone, then no glory can be claimed by any human being, any saint, or any institution — the whole of it returns to God. Bach signed his manuscripts *SDG*; Calvinism made it the final purpose of all things, that God be glorified in mercy and in justice alike. Here Protestantism is not so much denying a Catholic doctrine as pressing an emphasis to its limit: the creature disappears so the Creator may be all.
