Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# Phrygian
> *A door opening onto something older and darker than you expected.*
---
## The Mode
Phrygian is the third mode of the major scale, beginning on its third degree. Built on C it draws from A♭ major, producing a minor scale whose defining feature is a lowered second — a half step sitting right above the root. That interval, arriving so early and so close, sets the entire mood before the melody has gone anywhere.
It is the darkest of the commonly used minor modes, tense and exotic, with an undertow of menace or ancient ceremony. Where Dorian keeps a window open, Phrygian pulls the shutters closed. The flattened second gives it a distinctly Iberian, Middle-Eastern colour that no other diatonic mode possesses.
## Structure
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Interval formula | H W W W H W W |
| Notes (from C) | C D♭ E♭ F G A♭ B♭ |
| Characteristic tone | The ♭2nd — dark, Spanish |
| Parent major scale | A♭ major |
## Character
The lowered second is the whole story. That half step pressing against the tonic creates a gravitational pull and an unresolved tension, as if the second degree is forever trying to fall into the root. To Western ears trained on a natural second, it reads as foreign, brooding, and a little dangerous. Stack a major chord on that flattened second and you get the “Phrygian cadence” snap that so much flamenco and metal live for.
## In Practice
Phrygian is the home mode of flamenco and Spanish guitar, and by extension of a huge swath of heavy metal, where its dark tension and low-register menace are prized. It surfaces in film scores reaching for the ancient or the ominous, and in any passage that wants to sound antique, sacred, or threatening.
