Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes, 67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer. - scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault: slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion list plus a privacy guard. - tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note (capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other pages get a Related Knowledge block. - Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

## Overview
The **limbic system** is a loosely bounded set of interconnected structures beneath the cortex that together handle emotion, motivation, memory, and the body's response to what it feels. It is less a discrete organ than a functional coalition — the [Amygdala](/knowledge/neuroscience/amygdala), the [Hippocampus](/knowledge/neuroscience/hippocampus), the hypothalamus, the cingulate cortex, and often the thalamus and parts of the basal ganglia among its members — bound by the shared work of assigning emotional and survival significance to experience. This is where a neutral stream of perception acquires a charge: this is dangerous, this is comforting, this matters, this can be ignored. If the [Prefrontal Cortex](/knowledge/neuroscience/prefrontal-cortex) deliberates, the limbic system is what it deliberates *about* — the raw affective signal rising from below. The name itself comes from the Latin *limbus*, "border," coined for the ring of structures bordering the brainstem, and that border position is apt: the limbic system sits at the seam where the thinking cortex meets the body's automatic machinery.

## A System, Not a Reptile
It is worth retiring a piece of pop-neuroscience here. The "triune brain" model — Paul MacLean's mid-century picture of a primitive "lizard brain" of instinct, a limbic "mammal brain" of emotion, and a rational human cortex layered neatly on top — is dated and, as literal neuroanatomy, wrong. The brain did not evolve in tidy strata that can be peeled apart; the structures called limbic are ancient and modern alike and were never a single evolutionary layer. The term "limbic system" itself has fuzzy, contested borders, and specialists disagree on exactly which structures belong — some would retire the label entirely. What is real is the *functional* grouping: a network of subcortical structures that work together on emotion and motivation, in constant two-way conversation with the cortex rather than sealed beneath it. Emotion is not a lower faculty overridden by reason but a form of appraisal woven through cognition at every level; damage to the emotional apparatus, as with the ventromedial patients described under the [Prefrontal Cortex](/knowledge/neuroscience/prefrontal-cortex), leaves *decision-making* impaired, not liberated. Feeling is part of how the brain thinks.

## How the Pieces Work Together
The value of this note is as a bridge, because the members do their jobs in concert. The [Amygdala](/knowledge/neuroscience/amygdala) flags threat and salience and, when it fires, drives the hypothalamus to launch the [HPA Axis](/knowledge/neuroscience/hpa-axis) and the body's stress cascade. The [Hippocampus](/knowledge/neuroscience/hippocampus), its neighbor, supplies context and memory — binding the fear to a time and place, or failing to when overwhelmed, which is much of what goes wrong in Trauma and PTSD. The hypothalamus translates all of this into bodily state: heart rate, hormones, temperature, the felt physiology of an emotion. Sitting above the whole assembly, the [Prefrontal Cortex](/knowledge/neuroscience/prefrontal-cortex) regulates it, and the balance between limbic drive and cortical brake is, in a real sense, the balance of emotional life. The system runs on the same Neurotransmitters as the rest of the brain, and the patterns it lays down can be reshaped through [Neuroplasticity](/knowledge/neuroscience/neuroplasticity) — which is why Grounding, [Meditation](/knowledge/spirituality/meditation), and Healing can, over time, change the weather rather than just the day.
