Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes, 67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer. - scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault: slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion list plus a privacy guard. - tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note (capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other pages get a Related Knowledge block. - Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

## Overview
**Valentinianism** is the school of Gnostic thought founded by **Valentinus** in the second century — the most sophisticated, systematic, and, in a real sense, the most *churchly* of the Gnostic currents. Where other Gnostics stood defiantly outside the emerging orthodox church, the Valentinians worshipped inside it, took its sacraments, read its scriptures, and offered their myth as the deeper meaning behind the plain teaching the ordinary faithful received. This proximity made them the most dangerous heresy of all, and the one the church fathers argued against most strenuously — because Valentinianism was not a wild fringe but a serious, elegant rival that nearly won.

## Valentinus and His School
Valentinus was a gifted teacher and, by several accounts, a poet — an Alexandrian who came to Rome around 140 CE and was, tradition holds, nearly elected bishop of Rome. He lost, and Gnosticism's history might read very differently had he won. His followers — **Ptolemy**, **Heracleon**, **Theodotus**, and others — developed his teaching into the fullest of all Gnostic systems, mapping [The Aeons](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-aeons) of [The Pleroma](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-pleroma) with mathematical care into the **Ogdoad, Decad, and Dodecad**, and writing the luminous **Gospel of Truth** preserved in [The Nag Hammadi Library](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-nag-hammadi-library). Theirs was Gnosticism at its most refined: less a rejection of the church than a mystical interior to it.

## The Three Natures of Humanity
Valentinianism's most distinctive teaching is its **anthropology** — a threefold division of human beings by their innermost nature. The **pneumatics** ("spiritual") carry the divine spark fully awake; they are Gnostics by nature, destined for [The Pleroma](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/the-pleroma), saved by [Gnosis](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/gnosis) as surely as gold is gold. The **psychics** ("soul-people") possess soul but not full spirit; they are the ordinary faithful of the church, capable of salvation through faith and works but bound to a middle realm rather than the fullness — theirs is belief where the pneumatic has knowing. The **hylics** ("material," from *hylē*, matter) are sunk wholly in matter, without spark, bound to perish with the world they belong to.
The Valentinians read this scheme as the map behind Christianity's two audiences: the psychic church of faith for the many, the pneumatic gnosis for the few. It let them belong to the church and transcend it at once — and it was exactly this claim to a superior inner circle that the proto-orthodox found intolerable.

## The Bridal Chamber
At the center of Valentinian sacramental life stands the **bridal chamber** (*nymphōn*) — the highest of their mysteries, dwelling especially in the Gospel of Philip. Its meaning is the reunion of what was separated: the fallen soul rejoined to its angelic counterpart, the syzygy restored, the divided self made whole. It re-enacts, at the level of the individual, the healing of [Sophia](/knowledge/spirituality/gnosticism/sophia-aeon)'s fall — the return of the separated fragment to its complement in the fullness. Whether the bridal chamber was a literal rite, a spiritual initiation, or a mystery deliberately left veiled remains debated; the texts guard it as the innermost secret. What is clear is its shape: salvation imagined not as pardon but as marriage, the long-sundered pair restored.

## Nearly Mainstream
More than any other Gnostic school, Valentinianism came close to becoming the mainstream. Its adherents sat in the pews, its teachers nearly wore the mitre, its thought engaged the best minds of the age on their own ground. That it lost — that Irenaeus and the proto-orthodox prevailed, that the canon closed and the codices were buried — is one of the great contingencies of religious history. The version of Christianity that won was not the only serious contender. For a while, in the second century, the deep interior of the faith was very nearly Gnostic.
