Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes, 67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer. - scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault: slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion list plus a privacy guard. - tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note (capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other pages get a Related Knowledge block. - Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

## Overview
**Tantra** is the current within [Hinduism](/knowledge/religions-of-the-world/hinduism) (with a major Buddhist branch) that refused the ancient renunciate bargain. Where the classical path treated the world as the problem — flee the body, still the senses, escape — Tantra declared the world the medium: the body is not the obstacle to liberation but the instrument of it. Everything the ascetic renounced, the tantrika consecrates. **Kundalini** is Tantra's central experiential claim: that a reservoir of divine energy lies coiled (*kundal*, coil) at the base of the spine, and that awakening it and drawing it upward is enlightenment happening in the nervous system.
The traditions emerged in the middle of the first millennium CE, carried by texts called *tantras* framed as dialogues between [Shiva](/knowledge/mythology/hindu-mythology/shiva) and the Goddess, and flourished especially in Kashmir Shaivism — whose philosopher **Abhinavagupta** (c. 950–1016) built the most sophisticated account: reality as the play of consciousness and energy, recognizable in one's own experience (*pratyabhijna*, recognition).

## Shiva, Shakti, and the Serpent
The tantric cosmos runs on a divine polarity. **Shiva** is pure consciousness — still, witnessing, the ground. **Shakti** is power — energy, manifestation, the world in motion. They are not two gods but one reality seen from two sides, and the universe is their lovemaking. In the human body the drama miniaturizes: Shakti sleeps as kundalini, coiled three and a half times at the root; Shiva waits at the crown. Practice wakes her, and she rises through the central channel (*sushumna*), piercing the [Chakras](/knowledge/chakras) one by one — root to sacral to solar plexus to heart to throat to brow — until she unites with Shiva at the thousand-petaled crown. Union of Shiva and Shakti in the body *is* samadhi. The map of the centres, catalogued in the vault under [Chakras](/knowledge/chakras), is Tantra's gift to the world's spiritual vocabulary.
The fierce face of Shakti is [Kali](/knowledge/mythology/hindu-mythology/kali) — the black goddess who dances on Shiva's stillness, garlanded with skulls, adored by tantrikas precisely because she is everything the polite mind flees. Loving her is the practice of embracing what terrifies you, and she remains Tantra's clearest teaching in iconographic form: the energy that dissolves the ego does not look gentle while it works.

## Practice
Tantric method is technological in spirit — a vast toolkit rather than a creed. *Mantra* (sound as vibration of the goddess), *yantra* and mandala (geometric bodies of deities), *mudra*, ritual visualization, breath work (*pranayama*), and the postures and locks (*bandhas*) that hatha yoga was originally designed around: [Yoga](/knowledge/spirituality/yoga) as most of the modern world knows it descends from tantric energy-engineering, not from gymnastics. The systematic eightfold ladder of practice is mapped separately in the [Eight Limbs of Yoga](/knowledge/spirituality/yoga/eight-limbs-of-yoga); Tantra took that scaffolding and electrified it. The notorious "left-hand path" rites — the ritual use of what orthodoxy forbids, including sexuality — were real but always a minority current, transgression deployed as a tool for shattering the dualistic mind. The Western reduction of Tantra to sacred sexuality gets the proportions almost exactly backwards.
The tradition is emphatic about danger. Kundalini is compared to lightning, and the literature insists on a qualified guide; the modern clinical vocabulary even borrowed the term "kundalini syndrome" for awakenings that arrive faster than the person can integrate. Gopi Krishna's autobiographical account of a decades-long, initially destabilizing awakening is the classic modern document.

## Relationship to Hinduism
Tantra stands inside Hinduism the way mystical currents stand everywhere: partly absorbed, partly disreputable. Orthodox Vedic tradition long regarded tantrikas with suspicion — their rites bypassed caste, their texts bypassed the Vedas, their left hand touched the forbidden. Yet tantric ideas so thoroughly colonized Hindu practice (temple ritual, deity visualization, hatha yoga, goddess worship) that the boundary is now nearly invisible. It is the experiential stream in its most somatic form: where other mystics seek God in the soul, Tantra seeks her in the spine.
