kennethreitz ce93f429a2 Add Knowledge: the vault's reference shelf, crosslinked across the site
Publish the Obsidian vault's Knowledge folder as /knowledge (881 notes,
67 folders), with a Knowledge item in the nav and footer.

- scripts/import_knowledge.py regenerates data/knowledge from the vault:
slugged paths, folder notes as index pages, wikilinks resolved to site
links (or plain text), callouts, highlights, and Dataview tables
rendered statically. Personal notes are withheld via an exclusion
  list plus a privacy guard.
- tuftecms/core/knowledge.py builds a concept index from note titles and
aliases. First mentions on ordinary pages link to their Knowledge note
(capped, never in headings, code, links, or sidenotes); Knowledge pages
list related notes and where they're mentioned across the site; other
pages get a Related Knowledge block.
- Knowledge URLs join sitemap.xml (so the sweep test covers them), never
displace existing legacy slugs, list alphabetically, and mermaid
diagrams render client-side only on pages that have them.

# Lust
> *Lust is the closest counterfeit of love: all of the fire, none of the seeing.*

## The Tradition
Evagrius placed fornication (*porneia*) second among the eight thoughts, right after gluttony — the desert schema treated the two as siblings, appetites of the body that opened the door to the subtler sins of the spirit. Gregory the Great carried it into the seven as *luxuria*, a word whose range is instructive: not just sexual excess but luxuriance, overflow, the riot of appetite generally. Yet the tradition consistently ranked it *least* grave of the seven — Dante puts it at the top of the mountain, closest to Eden — because of all the sins it stands nearest to love, the thing it counterfeits.
## The Disordered Desire
Beneath lust is the longing for union — the desire to be met, merged, consumed and consuming — bent into the use of another person as an instrument of sensation. The disorder is not the desire's heat but its blindness: lust wants the experience and not the person, intensity without the vulnerability of being actually known. It reduces the other to surface and the self to appetite, which is why its aftermath is so often loneliness — the union it promises is precisely what its method prevents. The tradition's point was never that eros is evil; it was that eros is too important to be spent on objects.
## In Purgatorio
The seventh and final terrace, highest on the mountain: the lustful walk inside a wall of living flame, calling out exempla of chastity as they burn. Two crowds circle in opposite directions and greet each other with brief, chaste kisses before moving on — desire disciplined into greeting rather than seizure. What makes the terrace singular is that everyone must pass through it: Dante himself can only reach Eden by walking into the fire, coaxed by Virgil with the name of Beatrice. The fire does not destroy desire. It refines it into a love that can see.
## The Remedy
The counter-practice is [Chastity](/knowledge/virtues-and-vices/virtues/chastity-virtue) — not the extinction of eros but its integration, desire brought into alignment with love and commitment so that wanting and seeing become the same act.
## The Enneagram Passion
In the [Enneagram](/knowledge/enneagram), lust is the passion of [Type 8](/knowledge/enneagram/type-8-the-challenger) — and here the word recovers its older breadth. The Eight's lust is for *intensity* in every register: excess, impact, control, life at full volume, the whole world gripped rather than received. It is luxuria in Gregory's wide sense, appetite as armor against vulnerability — which is exactly what the fire on Dante's terrace burns away.
